One of the biggest misconceptions people have about working with a Realtor is that they need to have everything perfectly figured out before reaching out.
As a longtime Realtor, I can tell you that is simply not true.
Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest financial and emotional decisions most people will ever make. My job is not to judge where someone is in the process. My job is to help guide them through it.
Here are a few things I never judge my clients for.
1. Needing More Time Before Buying a Home
I completely understand wanting to take your time before buying a house.
In fact, I often tell clients it took me over a year to find my last car. And that is nowhere near the size of a decision compared to buying a home.
Whether you are still saving, unsure about timing, or just trying to figure out what feels right for your family, taking your time is normal. Buying a home in Harford County or anywhere else should not feel rushed.
The right home purchase happens when you are financially and emotionally ready, not when someone pressures you into it.
2. Getting Help From Family for a Down Payment
This is much more common than people think.
Many first-time home buyers today receive some type of financial help from parents or family members, especially when it comes to down payment assistance. I see it more and more every year.
There should be no embarrassment around families helping each other build long-term financial stability. If that support helps someone become a homeowner sooner or avoid financial stress, I think that is a smart decision.
A good Realtor should help you understand your options, not make assumptions about how you got there.
3. Having a Messy House During a Listing Appointment
I have 3 kids, a dog, and a cat. Trust me, I understand real life.
Very few people live in a “model home,” and I never expect to walk into one during a listing appointment. Families are busy. People work long hours. Life gets hectic.
If your house is cluttered, toys are out, dishes are in the sink, or laundry is piled up, that is okay.
When the time comes to prepare your Harford County home for sale, we will talk through practical steps to get it market-ready. But there is no reason to feel embarrassed before that point.
4. Not Having a Fully Updated Home
One of the biggest mistakes sellers make is assuming they need to renovate everything before listing their home.
The truth is, most homes are a work in progress.
Not every kitchen needs a complete remodel. Not every bathroom needs to look like HGTV. Buyers are often looking at the overall layout, location, price point, and potential of a home, not just whether every finish is brand new.
Part of my job as a Realtor is helping sellers decide which updates are actually worth making and which ones may not provide a good return on investment.
Sometimes simple improvements matter more than expensive renovations.
Real Estate Should Feel Comfortable, Not Intimidating
Whether you are buying your first home, thinking about selling, or just exploring your options, you should feel comfortable asking questions and having conversations without feeling judged.
Real estate is stressful enough already.
My goal as a Harford County Realtor is to help people navigate the process with honesty, guidance, and realistic expectations, no matter where they are starting from.
